Today I was at a supply store in Keokuk, IA getting some paper and while I was waiting I happened upon a little book that I could not refuse to buy. It is called Augustine Day by Day and it is published by Catholic Book Publishing Company, compiled and edited by John E. Rotelle, O.S.A. It basically consists of daily excerpts (small ones) from the writings of St. Augustine, along with a little prayer from his writings or based on them. This little gem fits nicely into my back pocket and is not too thick. What I find utterly ironic is that this little book, published by a Catholic Publishing Company, has this excerpt from Augustine:
March 1: The Promised Gift
Christ grants justification to those who believe in Him, simply because they have faith and not because they observe the law. The blessing granted to Abraham for his exemplary faith is extended to the Gentiles, so that we may receive the promised Spirit through faith. In other words, the promised gift to believers is not a spirit of outward observance but one of inward devotion inspired by love.
