Summer Vacation!

I’m on vacation right now. We’re headed out to CO for a Bauer Family reunion in Pueblo, and then down to TX to visit with Amy’s family.

Last night we stayed in Hays, KS at a Best Western. So far our experience has been that we actually enjoy staying in the less upscale and older hotels like Best Westerns than we do in the newer ones like Comfort Inn, Hampton Inn. I don’t know why, but it seems like these older ones are built more for family. The pools and spas are almost always better and the kids end up having much more fun than they do at the nicer hotels. Maybe that was more of the focus in the eighties–family vacation. Now, it’s “Leave the kids with the grandparents and go by ourselves” vacations. Anyway, we had a great time. Swam right when we got checked in, came in, ate at a great Chinese Buffet, then came back and swam somemore.

The funny thing about this particular motel is that I am certain we stayed in this same motel in the early eighties when I was on a family vacation out to CO. I remember the black gate around the pool like it was yesterday. I’ll never forget that vacation. We were travelling in our four-door Ford Maverick with no air conditioning in 111 degree weather with my parents in the front and us three kids in the back, and the dog. We licked drops of cold water off of the cooler when we ran out of water. And then we got to the hotel and there were ants in our room. We got mad at my mom for making a stink about it. Ah, the memories. What’s really scary is that our room number last night was 111.

Time to swim somemore, and head for Pueblo.

One Response to Summer Vacation!

  1. Pastor H.R. Curtis says:

    Blessings on your trip, Beisels!

This post brought back a lot of memories – I too have fond and vivid memories of hotel swimming pools, hot summers, and long drives through the Midwest.
